Vein Treatments
Are you concerned about the veins on your legs?
The doctors at SmartClinics offer proven medical treatments to help patients with spider veins. Doctors with extensive medical training in microsclerotherapy for treating spider/thread veins of the legs are available at select locations. If you have varicose veins you will need to see a vascular surgeon, your GP can refer you to a vascular surgeon for treatment if required.
What’s the difference between varicose veins and spider veins?
Varicose veins are knobbly, twisted and darkish-blue in appearance. Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. They are often red or blue and can look like tree branches or spider webs. They are mostly found on a person’s legs or face.
How can the doctor treat spider/thread veins?
Microsclerotherapy is used to treat spider/thread veins of the legs. This is a purely cosmetic procedure, as spider/thread veins do not cause any harm but are deemed unsightly by some people.
Microsclerotherapy can be performed on patients who do not have any underlying varicose veins (as confirmed on a duplex scan) or in those who have had their varicose veins treated by either surgery, laser or ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy. Once the more prominent varicose veins have been treated it is safe to proceed with the cosmetic therapy to the smaller surface vessels.
If you are not sure what types of veins you have on your legs or if you have any concerns about them, talk to your GP. They can help you understand your options. If you have varicose veins, this may include arranging a venous duplex scan and then discussing the results or a referral to a vascular surgeon. If you have visible veins on your upper body, like your face, IPL or laser may be a better option for you.
